First of all I’m not going to give an answer either way, I just want to give a perspective on the word ‘terrorism.’
If you asked a bunch of people what the word ‘terrorism’ meant, you would probably receive a variety of different answers. In fact, academics still disagree on what the word ‘terrorism’ really means and where the line is.
Is it a crime relating to religion? It appears that way.
Is what happened justifiable? Absolutely not.
But can the awful events in Woolwich yesterday really be described as terrorism? That isn’t as easy to answer.
There are many events to have happened in the past that are, in my opinion, definite acts of terrorism. 9/11, Hiroshima/Nagasaki and Black September for example were all acts carried out in an effort to use fear as a means to push views. (Be them political/religious etc.)
But as bad as the incident was, is the fatality of a soldier a terrorist attack? It is in no doubt a hate crime, but that does not make it terrorism. Racism maybe, but not terrorism.
Anders Breivick described himself as a Christian, but his appalling acts have been marked down as those of a lone mad man, but not a terrorist working on the behalf of all of the Chrisitan faith.
At the height of the IRA fight for independence, the bombers were rightly seen as terrorists, but that did not make every other Catholic a terrorist.
What I’m trying to say is that it’s very premature to start attaching the word ‘terrorism’ to the stabbing of Lee Rigby. It’s a strong word to be throwing about and before you use it, just think.
